Long-time
Kevin farmer and Army veteran, John (Jack) James Monroe died at
the family home west of Kevin on March 30, 2006 after a short
and brave battle with cancer. His memorial service with
military honors will be at 2:00 pm on Sunday, April 2, 2006 at
Sunburst Lutheran Church. Private family scattering of ashes
will be held at the family farm. Whitted Funeral Chapel of

Survivors include his wife of 55
years, Barbara Monroe; son, Randy (Kathy) Monroe of Las Vegas,
NV; and daughter, Stacy (Karl) Monroe Bear, Powell, WY. Jack is
also survived by seven grandchildren, Amanda Monroe, Bozeman,
MT, Jakob Monroe, Las Vegas, NV,
John (DeLana) Bear, Jordan (Sarah)
Bear, Dylan, Daniel, and Serena Bear, all of Powell, WY, and
one great-granddaughter, Jaden Rae
Bear of Powell, WY.
Jack was born January 2, 1928 in
Sunburst, MT, the only child of John B and Amanda (Speers)
Monroe. He was raised in the Sweet Grass hills and attended the
McDermott School, Havre Elementary and Sunburst High School.
Prior to enlisting in the Army, he worked at the Ed Larson and
Francis O’Haire farms east of
Sunburst. After his discharge, he worked for C&A Garage, owned
a repair shop and worked in the oil fields. In 1949 he began
farming and from the 1990’s to the present he changed to organic
farming. During this time he also owned an excavation business
where he worked on the second US Customs building at Sweet
Grass, Interstate 15 and various other projects. He was a
pioneer in land conservation having planted over 70,000 trees as
wind breaks on the family farm.
Jack was a member of Sweet Grass
American Legion Post #73, Sunburst VFW Post # 8952, Cut Bank
Moose Club, Comanche Airplane Society, and the Shelby Airport
Board from 1971 – 1993.
Jack enjoyed flying, prospecting
and mining, playing cards and being with his family and
friends. In past years he enjoyed arrowhead hunting and family
fishing trips. He was always willing to give advice and help
others.
