Hilborge
(Hilda) Gertrude Ewald, 91, a retired secretary from Shelby died
August 21, 2006 at the Marias Medical Center due to natural
causes. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday,
August 28, 2006 at St Luke’s Lutheran Church with visitation
from 10:00 am until service time. Interment will be in the
Rudyard Cemetery with a reception to follow at the Rudyard
Senior Center. Whitted funeral Chapel of Shelby is in charge of

Survivors include her grandson,
Brent (Mary) Waters of Malta; great-grandsons
Koey Waters of Billings and Klayton
Waters of Shelby; sisters Lillian (Clifford) Ulmen and Evelyn
Wanke both of Rudyard; sisters-in-law Inez Berge of Rudyard,
Violet ‘Babe’ Boughton of Great Falls, and Ardys Ewald of
Billings; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Hilda was
preceded in death by her parents, her husband, daughter, and
brother, Sam Berge.
Hilda was born July 9, 1915, the
eldest daughter of Eivind and Clara (Sanda) Berge. The family
homesteaded north of Rudyard in the Goldstone community. She
attended the rural Center School through the 8th
grade then furthered her education in Rudyard graduating in
1933. She also attended Northern Montana College in Havre.
Hilda and Daniel E Ewald married in February of 1934. They had
been married 38 years when Daniel passed away in 1972. To this
union one daughter, Louise Elaine, was born. When Louise
entered school, Hilda went to work for the Shelby Sheet Metal
Works and later went to work for the Star Cleaners. Hilda
retired from Mountain Bell Telephone after 35 years as a service
representative.
Hilda was a member of St Luke’s
Lutheran Church, Alpha-Naomi Circle, Sons of Norway Lodge #5078,
the Shelby Garden Club, Shelby Business and Professional Women,
SSS Club and the Shelby Bridge Club. Hilda’s favorite pastime
was her genealogy search. She was also an avid traveler having
traveled on all seven continents with only flying over
Antarctica. She had visited relatives in Norway several times.
