About Us

Dan Whitted, owner and licensed funeral director and embalmer, was born and raised on a farm just south of Omaha, Nebraska. He got his start in the funeral business in high school, helping out at Kahler Mortuary in Papillion, Nebraska by washing cars and running errands. He went into law enforcement after graduating from Papillion High School in 1964, serving as a Trooper with the Nebraska State Patrol and later as a deputy sheriff at various places around the state. He married Pamela Jean Andersen on August 23, 1969 in her hometown of Oakland, Nebraska. Dan decided he’d had enough of law enforcement and went back to school to pursue his real passion, the funeral business. He graduated from Mortuary School in Louisville, KY in 1977. They worked at and owned several funeral homes around the country before buying Burns Funeral Home in Shelby in February 1993.
Dan currently serves as the Toole County Coroner, Shelby Volunteer Fire Chief, a board member on N.E.T.A., a board member on the Toole County airport board, and serves on the board of the Montana Coroners Association. He is also a member of the Coutts-Sweet Grass Lions Club, Masonic Lodge and Tri-County Shrine Club. Dan enjoys flying and motorcycling.  You can email Dan at dan@whittedfuneralchapel.com

Pam, a former licensed practical nurse, is co-owner and serves as the office manager as well as assisting on funerals. She is a member of Shelby Soroptimist International, a member of the Shelby Book Club, a member of the Shelby Foursquare Church serving as its treasurer, and vice-chair of the Marias Medical Center Board as well as serving as a trustee for the Marias Medical Center Foundation. Pam enjoys spending time with her grandkids, traveling around the country with Dan on their motorcycle, horseback riding and reading.  You can email Pam at pam@whittedfuneralchapel.com

Licensed funeral director and embalmer, Justin Whitted, son of Dan and Pam, graduated from West Point (NE) High School in 1990 and received degrees in mortuary science from Wayne (NE) State College and Kansas City (KS) Community College School of Mortuary Science. He became a licensed funeral director in 1996 and worked at the largest firm in Omaha for two years as well as Bloomfield, Nebraska for a short time before moving to Shelby to join the family business in May of 1998. He married Shelly Dahl, in her hometown of Scribner, Nebraska on Sep. 27, 1997. Shelly is co-owner of Shelby Floral and Gift and occasionally helps on funerals when needed. They have a son Brock, born in 1999 and a daughter, Reese, born in 2001, to keep them busy.

Justin is a past North Central District Governor for the Montana Funeral Directors Association, current president of the Marias Valley Golf and Country Club Board of Directors, a past St. Luke’s Lutheran Church council member, a member of the Shelby Volunteer Fire Department and is a Toole County Deputy Coroner. In his spare time, Justin enjoys golfing, watching football and flying. Shelly is a dedicated wife and mother and enjoys spending time with her kids and scrapbooking.

Allan Gage and his wife Beverly are invaluable assets to the Whitted Funeral Chapel.  Allan assists on funerals as well as other tasks when needed.  Beverly is a big help as well, occasionally assisting with funerals, but mainly keeping Allan well nourished with her yummy baked goods.  They are two of the areas most respected people, being awarded the Silver Spur Award a few years back.
